Shadow of the Nightmare

Author's Note

Shadow of the Nightmare was written as a bit of backstory to the Emerald Colossus (at the time, called a "Colossal") and the Druid of the Thorn (Druid of War) concepts.

I was having a bit of fun taking popular video game concepts and characters and reinterpreting them for World of Warcraft. The Emerald Colossus was happily based off the video game masterpiece Shadow of the Colossus. Druid of War, in turn, was based around God of War, and the main character was a druidic version of Kratos from that franchise.

The story is still left unfinished, unfortunately. I did have a third part almost ready, but it's been lost to the gremlins of data backup and computer transfer.

I'm sure I'll either find it again or rewrite it. Either way, this story will be finished eventually.

Part I

Endaras Windhoof strode upon weightless hoofsteps across a landscape that was once flourishing. Now, however, it was blackened and forboding, as if the wildlife here had withered away. This once verdant place was a section of the Emerald Dream not often traveled by most druids, but Endaras had always found it peaceful. It had saddened him to learn that the Nightmare was encroaching upon it, and there was nothing he could do to stop the corruption's advance.

The stray scent of rotting grass assaulted Endar's nostrils, and the large tauren shook his head to expel the offending smell from his senses. He grumbled lowly at the faint burning sensation left within his snout, but the feeling was appropriate for his surroundings. He no longer felt comfortable here, only sorrowful. The horizon was a dull green, as if a thick haze smothered the primordial landscape.

Yet, Endaras walked onward. He feared not this part of the Nightmare, for he knew he was skirting the periphery. If he traveled deeper still, however, he would have to take care not to get pulled away in the ever-flowing currents of madness. As he strode past the dreamcatchers, whose ethereal nets caught the glimmering light of transient dreamers, Endar was thankful that they prevented innocent dreams from being consumed by the darkness. He was almost envious of the dreams themselves. There was nothing here to keep him from becoming one of the Unwaking.

The Unwaking. It was the term given to those unfortunate druids whose dream selves have been lost within the Nightmare. No longer could they find their way out, and their physical bodies remained asleep. The druids who were lucky enough to have someone tending to the needs of their bodies—needs like food and water—would survive until they could be rescued. Those without such caregivers, however, withered away and died as any neglected creature.

Endaras, called Endar or "Ender" for short by his family, had no such caregivers still alive. His brothers were killed during the Third War, and his parents were hunted during the skirmishes with the centaur shortly before Cairne allied the shu'halo with Thrall. Endar had chosen to become a druid after that conflict. He felt it to be a suitable pursuit, especially since it allowed him a rebirth, of sorts.

The new life was a welcome change over the old, especially when unburdened by family. Endar walked alone while awake, and he dreamed alone while asleep. For the most part, this was how he preferred it, for it allowed him the freedom to travel at his own pace. But there were, indeed, some days when the loneliness was strong. Today was such a day.

A deep vibration from the heart of the world forced the tauren druid to refocus on his surroundings. The dark mists swirled thicker here, but the sickly glow on the horizon cast everything as an inky silhouette. Up ahead, within a narrow valley, a dark shape churned near the edge of the jutting stone mountains. Endar could not make out what it was, but it appeared to be immense in size. It swayed slowly from left to right, but with great force. As the shape collided with the side of one of the mountains, the earth rumbled once again.

Endaras Windhoof strode swiftly over the ruined soil towards the thing. He shifted his form into that of a horned lion, honoring the animal totem that granted him the gift. Using his sharpened claws, Endaras climbed up a nearby high rocky outcropping so as to get a better vantage point on the struggle that raged within the narrow valley. Reaching a suitable position, he crouched low to the ground and watched in horror that which stood before him.

The creature—if even "creature" were the right word—stood taller than one of the pillars of Thousand Needles. It was made of entangled moss and carved stone. Its arms were thick and round, and its face was expressionless. Its eyes, two glowing green orbs set deep below an almost ape-like forehead, stared forward without emotion. Endar could make out swirled patterns carved into the stone of the thing's arms and legs.

Indeed, it appeared as if someone had constructed this monstrosity out of the ruins of an overgrown fortress. That the Emerald Dream was supposed to have been barren of such artificial constructs is what made this beast all the more intriguing and all the more frightening.

"The druid below is trying to control it." The gravely voice, which was speaking Common, startled Endar, who had not seen anyone approach. "He will fail, for the Colossal has gone wild."

Endar spun around and searched the outcropping, but saw no one amongst the shadows cast by the horizon's glow. Shifting back to his tauren form and straightening himself to his full, imposing, height, he responded. "Show yourself!"

A night elf stepped out from a maddening cluster of shadows created by a multitude of broken stone. He was mostly bald except for a thin strip of hair running the length of his otherwise bare head. His upper body, which was exposed per traditional night elf customs, was wreathed in similar tattoos to those that Endar had noticed carved into the Colossal. He wore a short kilt that stopped at the man's knees, and his feet were wrapped in tight leather and leaves. Instead of gloves, however, this kaldorei's forearms were covered in coiled vines. Almost snakelike, they tightened and loosened their grip about his wrists rhythmically.

The elf bowed slightly, but immediately put his index finger to his lips in a signal for Endaras to be silent. "They will hear you if you speak too loudly."

Endar glanced back at the Colossal, and for the first time noticed a tiny figure standing a distance ahead of it. It was another night elf druid, robed in greens and blues—or perhaps that was merely the shade cast upon him by the Nightmare, it was difficult to tell—and he carried both a wooden staff and a metal dagger.

"Who is he? And what is he trying?"

The nearly bald night elf glanced back down to the druid standing before the stone Colossal. "Fyran Dreamstrider. He was once one of the best of us."

"'Us?' Of whom do you speak, night elf?" Endar knelt upon the rock and watched below as the druid gracefully carve shapes into the thick air as he attempted to cast unrecognizable spells.

The bald night elf did not respond, but instead knelt beside Endaras as he watched. The Colossal swayed once again, slamming itself into the stone just below where the two men perched. The resulting impact nearly threw both of them from the outcropping and shook a few boulders free, but they were able to keep their balance. Pulling itself away from the mountain, the gargantuan humanoid shook its stone head as if it were dazed. Small pieces of rock flaked from its body and fell to the ground below. Endar figured that anyone caught by the falling debris would be crushed, despite the fact that it appeared as little more than dust from this position.

"Fyran is a Nightmare Warden," began the other. "We are those who fight back the gathering storm and turn the Nightmare's corruption against itself. We are druids from all totems: claw, talon, antler, thorn..."

"Thorn?" Endaras turned his horned head to the bald night elf. "I haven't heard of any Druids of the Thorn."

"Then it is how it should be," responded the night elf. "We are far from being well-known, and we prefer to remain that way."

"What is your name?"

"Velarias Thorngrasp. Druid of the Thorn. Nightmare Warden of the Emerald Dream." The night elf bowed his head deeply. "And what is yours?"

"Endaras Windhoof." Endar nodded his head in greeting, his shaggy mane swinging in the breezeless air. "That explains your appearance, night elf."

"If my appearance offends you, tauren—"

"No," interrupted Endar. "No, that is not what I meant. It's just that you do not appear like any other night elf druid I've known. You appear more..."

"...savage?" Velarias completed the tauren's statement as he grinned, bearing fangs that appeared to be sharpened through natural use. "You would be surprised at how savage the kaldorei can be."

Endar nodded his head as he turned back to what was happening in the valley below. The druid, Fyran, was still attempting to cast a spell against the immense Colossal. Endaras could only suspect that he was still trying to bring the giant under his sway.

Endar spoke to Velarias, who had also turned back to the battle of wills below. "What is that thing he fights? What is this 'Colossal?'"

"An ancient protector of the Emerald Dream," responded Velarias, as if he expected the question. "They wander the landscape making certain the land does not break or fall. It is their duty to the Dream, to keep it pristine. It is little different than our duty, Endaras."

"They are constructs? Shaped?"

"They are living, like you and I. But they belong here only. They do not wake."

"I see," Endaras spoke silently. "And why does Fyran want to control one?"

"Because he, too, has gone mad."

And with that statement, the roots around Velarias's forearms began to unravel. The Druid of the Thorn lashed the writhing vines out at a nearby jutting rock below and leapt down off the outcropping. Endar watched in shock as the night elf swung towards the Colossal and landed skillfully upon the creature's broad shoulders, completely unnoticed by anyone else.

Taking a deep breath and spreading his arms, Endaras Windhoof dropped himself off the cliff as he honored the stormcrow's totemic form.

"By the Earthmother, please let me surivive this."

* * *

Part II

Endaras Windhoof grasped the thick wartotem with both of his hands and swung with as much force as his formidable tauren muscles allowed. Fyran Dreamstrider, the insane Nightmare Warden, was stuck full on by the trunk of the hefty weapon and fell backwards against a moss colored boulder. His lithe body, the body of a night elf in the prime of his life, ceased moving after slumping to the shadow-saturated ground of the Emerald Nightmare.

Endar hated killing. Or so he was raised to believe. It was why he had chosen to join the Cenarion Circle and learn to be a Druid of the Wild. He knew he could better serve the Horde as an emissary to nature rather than a harbinger of war. But here he was now, standing above the broken body of a night elf. He had seen no true evidence of the fallen druid's madness; it was merely something that Velarias had claimed.

Putting his doubt behind him, Endar shouted towards the towering Colossal upon which his night elf companion stood. "Velarias! We have a problem!"

Velarias Thorngrasp did not respond as the massive animate statue bucked itself to the left and right in an attempt to throw the persistent night elf. He had been wrestling with it for what felt like hours, but mere moments were all that had truly passed. The two druids, Endar and Velarias, had taken it upon themselves to prevent the mad Nightmare Warden from successfully gaining control of the corrupted Colossal. Now that Fyran had been dealt with, all that remained was to quell the raging monstrosity before it rampaged through the rest of the Emerald Dream.

Fyran had proven to be an easy opponent, distracted as he was due to the delicate spellwork necessary to control something so large. Endar needed simply to conjure the wartotem and give it one really good swing. A part of his Horde pride was ... disappointed ... that it had been so quick. The tauren was taken aback at his unexpected desire for a good fight.

The Colossal seemed to sense Endar's disappointment and brought its gargantuan fist down upon the tauren, who barely managed to roll away before being flattened. Shards of rock and clumps of dark green soil rained down upon Endar as he scrambled back to a crouching position. He would have to be more attentive to the giant's movements.

The night elf, Velarias Thorngrasp, swung down beneath the Colossal's chin, using a mixture of the mossy growths that hung from the stone face and Velarias's own vines. Endar had watched in fascination as the night elf caused the vines wrapped around his wrists to coil and uncoil upon his command, and he used them with great skill. Were he not using them to grasp onto and swing from available protrusions in the cliffsides, he was using them as whips to corrale the immense monstrosity in a specific direction. Right now, however, he was using them to make his way to the other side of the beast's face.

"Velarias!" Shouted Endar a second time, but he knew the kaldorei would not hear him. The Colossal was growling from the depths of its ancient stone and moss body, and the noise was loud enough to cause the ground to rumble when it did so. He would have to help his newfound acquaintaince take down the sentinel before any warning could be given. Whispering a prayer to the Earthmother, Endar slammed the totem into the ground and then took long hoofstrides towards the Colossal's fist as his weapon dissipated into the ground behind him. Leaping into the air, the tauren shifted into a stormcrow and soared over the massive hand as it was pulled free from the crater it had made upon impact.

The Colossal plowed its right shoulder into the nearby cliff in an attempt to crush the birdform druid against the rocks. Diving quickly out of the way, Endar could see that Velarias had wrapped a vine around one of the stony outcroppings on the left shoulder and was swinging back up into his previous position. Despite being shaken free by the collision, the night elf was in no danger. Endar banked around the thick trunk of the raging statue and flapped his wings so as to ascend just near where Velarias was regaining his footing.

Shifting quickly as he landed, Endar reached down to help the night elf the rest of the way. "We have a problem," the tauren began, but a quick gesture from Velarias stopped his warning.

"We have many problems, tauren," said Velarias, running past Endaras and towards the back of the Colossal's neck. "We'll handle them one at a time." He leaped onto the neck and began to climb up the creature's head.

Wrinkling his snout in frustration, Endar strode carefully and followed Velarias. The Colossal's constant bucking and swaying made balance tricky, but Endar was confident that the stormcrow would save him should he fall. "No, Velarias! You do not understand!"

The Colossal reared up and bellowed a deep roar. It was a deafening sound that threw Endar off his precarious footing and sent him tumbling down the back towards the earth. But before he could allow the stormcrow's form to take him, Endar felt his descent stop sharply as thick vines wrapped themselves around his torso from above. Looking up, Endaras Windhoof nodded his breathless thanks at Velarias, who had tied himself to a protrusion on the giant's head before catching the falling tauren. A faint beam of light could be seen behind the other druid, something that Endar had not noticed before.

The tauren grasped the vines and used it to climb his way back up, finally reaching Velarias before letting go of the vines. He noticed that mere yards from where they stood was a glowing rune circle, roughly the side of a small shield. Turning back to the night elf, Endar spoke. "Velarias, there is something you must s—"

"—in a moment, Windhoof." Velarias interrupted impatiently. "I must stop this creature's rampage before it strays too far. You have taken care of Fyran?"

Endar's eyes strayed to the ethereal glow from the small circle of light in the Colossal's head. "I have, but there is something el—"

"—after I do what must be done." Velarias nodded quickly and raised his hand. In his grasp was a thick rope of vine that writhed as if alive. In the blink of an eye, however, the vine straightened and darkened, turning the deep brown of a tree's branch. Thorns sprouted along the side of it, and the whole length stiffened into a deadly short spear. "After I kill it."

Endar's attention snapped once again to the night elf as Velarias leaped over to the glowing disc and knelt beside it, grabbing tufts of long moss in order to maintain his perch. The tauren tried to call out once more, but the Colossal bellowed again, and his words were swallowed by the sound. He watched as Velarias plunged the sharpened spear-formed vine into the bright surface. Endaras and Velarias both held fast as the titanic creature wailed and thrashed in pain. Endar knew that Velarias was extending the length of the spear deeper into the Colossal's head, branching and worming its way in to find the heart of the thing's consciousness.

Suddenly, Endar felt weightless, and he realized that the Colossal was falling forward. Not wanting to be a part of the impact, he took the stormcrow's blessed form once again and soared into the air away from the collapsing beast. Glancing down, he could still see the night elf holding fast to the top of the stone skull. Velarias's form was soon lost in the cloud of debris kicked up as the gigantic animate stone monstrosity hit the ground. The narrow valley shuddered, and the shockwave from the impact could even be felt from the air. Flapping his broad wings to keep himself steady, Endar circled the dust cloud for a few long moments as he waited for it to clear.

A hint of movement caught Endar's eye from within the shattered pieces of the Colossal, and he swooped down towards it. Shifting back into the massive tauren that he was, Endar ran his way over the rubble and towards a kneeling figure.

"Velarias!" Endar shouted.

"I'm fine," he began. "I've been through worse." The night elf coughed through the choking dust cloud.

Surprisingly, Endar did not look doubtful. "Indeed. That's why I've been trying to warn you." With a thick finger, Endar pointed over Velarias and toward the entrance to the valley, across an open plain. "It would seem that 'worse' approaches."

Velarias stood up and stepped away from Endar. The vine in his hand that had pierced the head of the Colossal hung loosely once again. He stepped near one of the dreamcatchers, allowing the dreamlight to illuminate his muscular form. "The Nightmare..."

In front of him was a roiling cloud of corruption. From within the churning madness could be seen shadows that seemed to watch. Familiar shapes, like those of the Shadow Panthers, were mixed with the shapeless horrors of Nightmare. A chorus of screams and wailing could be heard from within, as if the unwaking souls were crying their lament to any who could hear.

The low cloud was close. Already it consumed the dust from the fallen Colossal. Already it threatened to engulf both Velarias and Endaras. Not even the horizon promised safety, for in the distance lumbered two enormous shapes. Larger than their fallen brethren, these two Colossals strode towards their sibling's resting place. Countless beams of ethereal dreamlight emanated from these titanic guardians, some casting their illumination deep into the Nightmare sky.

"We will need more vines, Velarias."

The night elf grunted and chuckled. "We will, Endaras. We most definitely will."

"What do we do now?"

Velarias Thorngrasp tightened his grip around the vine and grined wickedly. "The blood is on my hands, tauren, not yours. You may depart this place and find the waking world."

"And what of you?"

"Me?" Velarias's grin widened. "I go to war."

* * *

Emerald Colossus

Before the Stormrage novel was released, the Emerald Dream was largely a mystery to us. We had only seen it in a few quests as a green tinted version of the material plane.

Original lore established the Dream as the primal version of Azeroth, a natural "backup," if you will. As such, I believed there would need to be sentinels who wandered the Dream in an attempt to maintain the integrity of the original vision.

What would happen if the Emerald Nightmare corrupted these colossal sentinels? How would the druids have to deal with these massive wandering constructs?

Druid of the Thorn

During my attempt to reinterpret popular video game franchises into World of Warcraft, God of War III had recently been released. It was also around this time that I did the Emerald Colossus concept. I believed that having a more edgy druid concept would give the colossus a viable adversary.

In adition to this, I chose to infuse a little of my "feldruid" concept into it as well to get a truly badass physical druid design.

The Druid of the Thorn is a further refinement of the "feldruid" concept that has been a staple of Netherbane guild roleplay for a great many years: if druids commune with nature and ask it for its assistance and power, what happens to those druids who commune with corrupted nature? Do they go insane after too long? Or do they become something different?

Druids of the Thorn were an extension of the concept. They were druids who had been affected by the corrupting nature of the Nightmare and other darker natural influences. Their bodies begin to reflect the corruption through the protrusion of thick thorns from their bodies. They also have vines that are attached to their forearms, acting as living whips with which they can attack or defend.

Overall, the Druid of the Thorn takes the demon hunter template with which I'm so fond and applies it to their polar opposite: the druid class.
